How coffee pod machines work
Greatly simplified, this is what occurs interior a normal pod gadget:
Artwork displaying how a pod espresso maker works
You load water into the tank at the back.
A pump at the lowest sucks the water in and pumps it thru the machine.
The water heats up to an appropriate temperature as it flows up beyond the heating element.
The water is pumped thru a narrow needle to growth its strain.
The hot, high-stress water pumps thru the floor coffee in the pod, liberating the taste. In the Tassimo, the water pumps up and into the pod through a slender hole at the brink, then drips go into reverse again via a larger hole within the center.
A piece of filter paper at the bottom of the pod stops the coffee grounds from falling via into the coffee.
Coffee drips thru into your cup.
What do they appear like inner?

Unfortunately, I haven’t any pix displaying the internals of a real pod coffee maker—but I do have the next satisfactory aspect: one of the unique design drawings filed for the Tassimo coffee maker, from the original US patent software filed by way of Kraft Foods in 2005:
Outer case: This is crafted from difficult ABS plastic and designed as a -part clam-shell so the interior elements may be equipped together effortlessly.
Water heater: In the unique layout, that is a 1550-watt heater (as compared to the 2000–3000 watt heating elements in common electric kettles). It can warmness enough water to make a coffee from about 20°C to approximately 85°C (70°F to 185°F) in beneath a minute.
Water pump: This powerful pump can circulate nearly a liter of water in a minute; in practice, it does not want to move some thing like a lot to make a unmarried cup of coffee. Its process is to move the water from the (blue) tank at the returned into the (red) water heater and then thru the espresso pod. It works at a pressure of one–2 bars (roughly 1–2 instances regular atmospheric stress). That would possibly sound loads, but it is drastically decrease stress than in an ordinary espresso gadget, which fits at greater like eight–15 times atmospheric pressure.
Air compressor: After the espresso is disbursed, this blows pressurized air thru the system to make sure that every one the pipes are clear, ready for brewing the subsequent cup.
Water tank: This holds kind of 1.Five liters of water. It sits at the back of the machine and has a spring-loaded valve at the bottom, wherein it clips onto the water pump.
